CHAPTER 11: NAPOLEON BONAPARTE AND THE AGE OF ROMANTICISM
This chapter mainly looks at the period of 1795-1820. When the French Revolution seemed to be over, brilliant French General Napoleon Bonaparte swept into France and rose to power, eventually crowning himself as emperor of France, thus destroying the republic so many died for. In doing so, however, he brought glory and infamy to France through his series of wars throughout Europe. Napoleon sought to build an empire that rivaled the Romans, and he may have succeeded if not for some serious missteps. Not only did he stir up trouble throughout Europe, his revolutionary influence extended as far as Haiti, Mexico, and South America, which eventually cost Spain its empire in the west. At the same time, a new intellectual and artistic movement took hold of Europe- Romanticism.
