CHAPTER 13
Economic Advance and Social Unrest (1830-1850)
Economic Advance and Social Unrest (1830-1850)
This chapter focuses mainly on the growth of the industrial working class in Europe in the mid-180's, and the social, political, and intellectual responses to that growth. The growth of the industrial revolution meant that the middle class grew as well, and they largely benefited from industrialism. However the poor population grew exponentially as well, and the middle class mostly turned their back on their plight. We see an example of this in the unsuccessful 1848 revolutions that took place across Europe, starting of course in France. This time, the revolutions were not led by the bourgeoisie, but rather against the bourgeoisie. These revolutions were a call to arms by the poorest members of society, in which demands were made for better working and living conditions, as well as a greater political voice. The fact that they failed illustrates the enormous disparity between the middle class and the poor, and it also gave rise to new ways of economic thinking, such as utopianism, utilitarianism, socialism, and communism. Other events such as the Irish Potato Famine will also highlight the plight of the poor. Finally, we will look at the growth of municipal police forces and prison reform, which became necessary in industrial European society to deal with the growing crime rate that accompanied the growing poverty rate.
