The Trans-Atlantic Economy, Trade Wars, and Rebellion in the Colonies
CHAPTER 8: THE TRANSATLANTIC ECONOMY, TRADE WARS, AND REBELLION IN THE COLONIES
This chapter focuses on rivalries that existed between European powers in the 1700's, in particular over resources and colonies. We will explore the concept of mercantilism as a way to view available wealth in the world, and how it perpetuated the rivalries over land and people. A major part of understanding the Trans-Atlantic Economy and its role in 18th century politics and economics is the Atlantic Slave Trade. Millions of Africans were taken from Africa, traded by Europeans to the Americas in exchange for consumer goods such as sugar and cotton. Slavery fueled the 18th century economy and political wars for the next century, and also spurred a new way of thinking about humanity. Abhorrence of slavery inspired many abolitionists to redefine the idea of freedom. Finally, we will take a look at a familiar topic in colonial history- The American Revolution. However, we will approach it from a European perspective and analyze the causes and consequences of the American Revolution as a European, rather than American, event.
